Cameron County is the southernmost county in Texas. The population is estimated (2017) to be 423,725. The county seat is Brownsville and the population is estimated to be 183,046 as of 2014. Cameron County was named for Captain Ewen Cameron a soldier during the Texas Revolution and in the ill-fated Mier Expedition. From the 19th century and throughout WWII and continuing, Fort Brown was a US Army outpost in Cameron County.
Cameron County has a total area of 1,276 square miles and 386 square miles of the county is water. The county borders the Gulf of Mexico. The median income for a family in Cameron County was $33,770 in 2010. Almost 35% of the population lives below the poverty line making Cameron County of the poorest counties in Texas. In 2000 Texas A&M did a study claiming that 43% of residents of Cameron County do not have basic literacy skills.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operates the Port Isabel Service Processing Center located in Cameron County and next to the Port-Isabel-Cameron County Airport. The airport has four runways and offers fuel and other general aviation services.
The FAA approved SpaceX a private spaceport east of Brownsville on the Gulf Coast. The SpaceX project is supposed to employ 75-100 full-time work by 2019.
